Oneria Opening at Studio C

oneria-huff-post-john-seed-2I am so honored and humbled to be part of this show with so many talented women… the art was stunning… and Peggy Nichols a wonder of a woman who organized it. There was plenty of exposure and the event was well attended and several artworks sold. Overall a great show to the end. The even was planned inconjunction with the Annual Santa Fe Arts Colony art weekend.

Water Works Show Opening Ojai

Water Works Show at the Porch Gallery, Ojai

Symbol; 22x30; watercolor on lana

Symbol; 22×30; watercolor on lana

Show up from July 5 – August 17, 2014

Curated by Juri Koll
With Catalog Essays by Peter Frank, Shana Nys Dambrot & John Seed

The artists in this show use watercolor, inks, and other liquid media for a variety of reasons – some love the risk of not being able to alter the result once it hits the paper. Others have a more formal reason for the process. Some use the medium as a contemplative, almost reverential experience, or for “quiet meditation or being present in the moment”, as Shana Nys Dambrot says. All these motivations inspire these works, and engage the audience with the here and now, regardless of when the work was completed.

“I paint watercolors because they are alive, their blending creating another reality that was not planned or expected.  The chemistry of the medium is all about water… in the air, time of day and year, how liquid the paint and if the paper is prewet or dry. For me, painting with watercolor is “high-risk” you never know how a piece will turn out. Water, the flow of life and change.”

“Party” by Karrie Ross; 15″x22″; watercolor oil, acrylic on 300 arches paper

This is my second time at the Brand Works on Paper. I’m very happy to be included with such a fine list of artists.

From the Brand website: “For more than 40 years the Annual Juried Exhibition organized and sponsored by the Brand Associates has been one of the preeminent stages upon which artists from around the country have exhibited their work— more than 2,000 of them to date. This monumental record is enhanced by the historically significant Southern California-based artists, educators and critics who have served as jurors during those 40 years.

Mother’s Day Lunch at MOAH Lancaster “National Treasure: The California Poppy”

Mother’s Day Lunch at MOAH Lancaster “National Treasure: The California Poppy”

I have not been a fan of theme shows, it seems I just don’t do them very well. It might be because I’m mostly abstract and themes are figurative. So, when a friend mentioned the MOAH show about Poppies I initially just flaked on it… then I started thinking… “I can paint a poppy. The flower that I love. The most beautiful orange EVER… that’s E . V . E . R….” So I painted three images of varying degrees of abstraction. From 1. as real as I paint 2. combined into a current series 3. totally out there abstract. AND #1 and #2 were accepted. Thank you MOAH!

Solo Show at Sundance Cinema in West Hollywood, Ca

As the art world changes, so do the locations where art can be displayed. Many small business and large corporations are starting to make space available for local artists. This installation is just such a location, a cinema located at the famous corner of Sunset Blvd. and Laurel Canyon near where Pandora’s Box used to be in the 1960s.

I received an out-of-the-blue call from their representative when they just happened on my art website while researching a variety of artists in the Los Angeles area. Thank you Sundance Cinemas  for your interest in my work.

The show is located in their upstairs lounge/gallery space as well Continue reading

As The Cloud Weeps: Bejeweled Bird by Karrie Ross

Always a great feeling to receive an award for my artwork. The Topanga Canyon Gallery Annual Juried Show 2014 with Juror Jim Morphesis did just that. My piece “As the Cloud Weeps: Bejeweled Bird was awarded 3rd place.

This is one of my new pieces combining paint and ink into what I call ‘surrealistic’ imagery. I find that the displacement Continue reading

Book 1 : Our Ever Changing World: What are You Saving from Extinction

Art is passion exposed.

OECW_logo-72

A series of currently 3 books about artists intended to answer questions I’ve carried around with me for awhile. All having to do witht he art world and the who, what, why, how, when of artists.

Book One:

For 9 months, I worked on an art project in the form of organizing a book… about artists, a piece of their work and a story. Book #1 of 4, they are based on questions I’ve been carrying around in my mind: First Question is: What are You Saving from Extinction? and I invited 35 artists to join in on the conversation and share their story.

The project originated with my inquiry into “why always an artist statement and not a story?” The book took several paths while I was firming up my focus and the artist were **very kind** and stayed the course as I grew into it and the book morphed into what it is now. ****** Without the artists generous efforts, the book would not have been possible, I am very grateful to you all, thank you again.

Book One, covers my thinking that artists “save” something from Continue reading

OECW: Book 1: Vromans Book Signing 2013

OECW: Book 1: Vromans Book Signing 2013

The book signing was designed as the first step in many to promote the book “Our Ever Changing World: Through the Eyes of Artists: “What are you saving from extinction?”

Stories are the spice of life.
When sprinkled around create a mood,
something that feeds imagination.
Stories share you.
~Karrie Ross

Our Ever Changing World: Through the Eyes of Artists, began with an inquiry into the quote by Frida Kahlo. “I paint flowers so they will not die.” Then the project grew into the question of “What are you saving from extinction?” and finally morphed into a sharing of stories, a special moment-in-time in an artists’ life. A possible aha! moment of awakening and connecting for them.
